課程概述

The second half of a full year practical introduction to translation.

課程目標
1) Reinforce literary and linguistic analytical abilities.
2) Build rhetorical and contrastive analytical skills.
3) Deal with a greater variety of text types (literary, legal, technical, not just 新聞稿).
課程要求
1) Same as last term: a) weekly written homework (with more groupwork). b) and independent project and presentation.

2) New: a) a written journal (yes, it has to be written:-). b) no midterm or final.

NOTE: I will mark harder this term, and will not mark each week twice - you will be responsible for compiling a list of errors, corrections and notes week by week, based on my corrections.

指定閱讀
John, if you've bought Words Like Loaded Pistols already I will buy it from you. I wouldn't mind having a copy for myself. I have decided it is not going to be convenient to use in class.

I have not decided upon a text yet - the first text below is a "distinct possibility". But please wait for next week.

Some recommendations are given below.
參考書目
Pinkham, The Translator's Guide to Chinglish (中式英語之鑒). It's by an American on her experience as an editor in China. She gives lots of good advice, and there are exercises to do. It's readily available and cheap.

Pellatt and Liu, Thinking Chinese English Translation. It's excellent, very well written, but expensive and not readily available.

Hofstadter, Le Tombeau de Marot. It's inspiring, one of my favorite books, but it's long, demanding, and deals with French-English translation.

Leith, Words Like Loaded Pistols: Rhetoric From Aristotle to Obama. This book is so amazing, really entertaining. But kind of expensive, and not readily available.

Lanham, Analyzing Prose. This is by the author of a book on rhetorical terms. It's the best book on English style I've seen.

Yes, it has to be written! Sorry! It's an experiment. I want it to include errors and corrections and comments. I also want you to make observations from your language learning experiences.
4.
Final project
20%
It has to go online somehow - Wikipedia or whatever. At least as a blog post.
